Remake, Reboot, or Original—When Does a Remake Really Work?

I’ve been wondering when a remake is really more than just a familiar title in new packaging. Some remakes manage to develop an identity of their own, while others feel more like reheated leftovers from the day before—just with a bigger budget.

What do you think: Does a remake need to stay as faithful to the original as possible, or is it okay for it to take distinctly new directions? Which remake convinced you, and which one made you think: They should have just left it alone?
